She's boring as hell, but the course isn't too bad..just be sure to read the book, the multiple questions and T/F are derived from there. the questions are tricky but the essay questions are cake, there's three and they are basic questions over the reading material. go to class! there are mini group assignments during class..which is where the participation points come from. plenty of extra credit available too..you can write a minimum of 2 papers both are 10 pts each...should've done that.

This course is not extremely difficult, but Professor Dowell is extremely monotone and it was hard to not fall asleep in her class. The reading for this class is OVERKILL! You have the text book which you are supposed to read most of plus 3 additional books to read. I did not read hardly any of it and I was fine because you go over everything in class. If you can get a different teacher I would, she was very boring. If you do have to take this class... it is not the worst thing in the world but I do not recommend it.

I took Dr. Dowell's class as a May term and it wasn't bad at all. Going into it, I had no idea what Anthropology was and I came out with some understanding. She does talk a lot, but there are also many videos that we watched. We all had to give short little presentations but they weren't anything extensive, just an overview of the assigned chapter. We read parts of three different books, which was the worst because they were expensive, but over all I would reccomend taking this class, maybe not as a semester long class, but definately short term!!

I took this class because I needed it to fill my category e general elective. Worst mistake of my college career, and I'm done at Western after this semester! This is the second C I've ever made in college, and it came from a 120 level class! The entire class period is spent taking notes and listening to her talk, and when it comes test time, you have 60 pages of notes, five chapters and other books to review. I don't think that a gen ed course should be one of my most difficult in college! Don't take this class unless you want to spend hours going over useless crap that will not prepare you for the real world.

This class was ok. You have to buy three books to read (in addition to the text) which you will get reading assignments from just about every class. The chapters are about 40 pages each. I never read one book and I have a 92 in the class right now. She goes over everything before each quiz/test which helps out, she also gives out study guides. I write pretty small and took about 4-5 pages of notes everyday. You also have two paper to write, both of which involve "fieldwork"...yea, lol. Overall I think this course asked WAY to much for being intro and it was kinda boring; felt more like a literature class after we analyzed every sentence from every book. I'm a Biochem major and I took more notes in here than in any of my upper level science classes. If I had to do it over again I'd look elsewhere...she is kinda monotoned too. No offense to her she is a really sweet lady but I guess I'm not a Anthropology kinda person. Oh yea, and every test/quiz that I got back she had my score added up to about a 96-97 and then she went back through the test and knocked off a point here and a point there so I never made higher than a 90 on the quizzes..that really pissed me off. Oh well.

Dr. Dowell is great professor. She knows her stuff and explains it in a way that you can understand. The class isn’t overly hard although there are 3 books to read on top of the textbook. The tests are moderate in difficulty but there are no surprises and study guides are always given out. The final grade is determined out of 100 points and for my class there were about 9 extra-credit opportunities worth 3 points each, so you can easily bring your grade up if you need to. I don’t need to take another Anthropology class but if I did I would definitely take her, highly recommended.
