This course is set up as what I pictured to be a standard college course. Complete discussion based. If you can't write fast while listening then don't sign up for this course. I thought the material was interesting enough that studying for it came easily. I'm a good note taker so this course was easy. She prepares you well for exams and each exam is cumulative (which actually helped my grade). There is one project you do throughout the whole semester--don't wait until the last minute, you will die.

Let me begin by saying if you want an easy A this is not the class for you but if you want to learn really interesting material this class will be your favorite! This class will change your perspective on so many different topics for the better! I think this class should be required because it is good to learn about people that are not just like you! I am a nursing major and this class will help me so much with how I interact with patients because I will be able to think about their lifestyle from their perspective and not just my own! You will never be bored in her class, her lectures are always intriguing. Take this class you will not regret it!

I have taken Dr. H for multiple classes, all relating to the field of Cultural Anthropology. She is funny, quirky, intelligent, and a great lecturer. Her exams are tough -all short answer and essay- but if you pay attention in class and do the readings, you should have no problems. She generally gives a substantial amount of notes, but these are helpful in studying for your exams as well. There are generally 2-4 books assigned for each class she teaches. I never had to buy a textbook, only paperbacks written on various cultural practices throughout the world. There are discussion days assigned to each book and help in providing extra points to help your grade. I would highly recommend Dr. H to anyone who is willing to do the readings and attend class. Your eyes will be opened to so many things.

Loved this course! If you are fairly smart and a good student, you'll have NO problem getting an A. The lectures and readings are very interesting. But, attendance is required and checked daily. Also, there is a pretty large amount to read and she gives about 5 "pop" quizzes (she says "pop" but she ALWAYS warns you) that are SUPER easy if you have done the readings. My only complaint is that there were ALOT of notes (at least 2 pages daily.)

This course can be moderate to difficult. Dr. H is a brilliant lady and connects well with her students. This class was an 8 o'clock and attendance is required, but Dr. Hudepohl made the material some of my favorite so far. She assigns a substantial amount of reading and is serious about her deadlines, but she was very available throughout the year for questions. Overall, one of my favorite professors.

This class was not extremely interesting to me because she just seems to drone on and on. She is cynical and has some very weird tendencies. You have to study and take good notes if you want to do well in this class. On quizzes and exams you have to give her enough information that she is convinced you read the ethnography or short story to get the points.

Dr. Hudepohl is really nice and knows what she is talking about but it is a tough class to get an A in. The whole class is worth 200 point so you are only allowed to miss 20 for an A. You have 2 tests, a midterm and a final, which is composed of Identification, Short Answer, and Essay. You need to know what you are talking about in order to get points. You also have 4 quizzes which sometimes have multiple choice but are identification for the most part. She drops your lowest quiz grade though. The projects are really time consuming. Be prepared to write a lot for your projects and go to events on campus. If you do the work she grades pretty easily on your projects though. You have to constantly take notes during class because they help a ton on the tests. I would take her if you want a little bit of a challenge.

This class is discussion based, as are most of Dr. H's classes. That means you MUST do the reading, have decent attendance, and actually speak up in class to get a good grade. There is a lot of reading and all books are required (no textbook, but several ethnographies)--some reading is hard and some is easy.
Tests are ID, short answer, and essay. All you have to do to get a good test grade is to answer the questions using specific examples from the readings and class discussions.
Also, a research paper is required. This is the most difficult part of the class, but she doesn't grade that hard (as long as you have good references).
If you like learning about other cultures and like discussion groups then you will do very well in this class. I was not originally very interested in the Caribbean, but Dr. H made it interesting anyway. She is very willing to help any student who needs it.

Hudepohl knows what she is talking about. She is very interesting to listen to and delivers the information in a way that anyone can understand. Yet her tests/quizzes are difficult and are all essay questions. There are three major projects that must be completed. The main downfall to this class was the lack of points. She offered maybe 250 points the whole year, making every point essential to getting a good grade. You will learn a lot if you take this course but be prepared to write long essays using specific information that she wants.

Dr. Hudepohl is a fantastic professor who exemplifies everything you want when it comes to a professor--passion, humour and knowledge. She's a little quiet, so don't sit next to a noisy heater. Participation always looks good and your opinions on various points can help to spark good debate and thought on the topic at hand. There are a number of large projects (4) that take a good bit of work (24ish pages in total for me), but are good learning experiences. She'll give you bad grades on them if you don't work, so turn in a high quality product every time. Tests are essay and the midterm is closely timed. There are only two tests. Participation is a significant part of the grade, so make sure you participate enough and then some, specifically on days set aside for discussion for she documents the amount of times you've spoken and the quality of your opinion and totals it at the end. Great professor with a cool subject, a must-take!

I like Dr. Hudepohl. She made the class very interesting. I, personally, liked this class. I liked the material and the teacher, but you do take a good bit of notes, and the tests are kinda tough. You do need to study a good bit before the test if you want to do well. The quizzes that she gives aren't really hard. As long as you go to class and pay attention, I think you should do alright in this class.

Dr. Hudelpohl is a good teacher, I mean her lectures are very interesting and she teaches her class very well. However her projects and tests aren't very well constructed. She gave all four of the projects for the class after the midterm and it was really hard to get them done with all my other classes.

This is an extremely easy class! The topics were very interesting if you like other cultures, and I even took it at 8:00am. Kate is also a great teacher who is very willing to help you if you come to her about something. There are lots of readings but you can just skim them and still get away with an A. The projects are a very small and they don't take as much time as other people have expressed. I put the least effort into this class compared to the my other ones that semester, and I still managed to have a grade over a 100 because she offers so much extra credit. You have to really enjoy the subjects that she teaches in order to like the class, but other than that, it is one of the easiest (and most interesting) classes you can take at Western.

I really liked this class though I heard some students say they couldn't get into it because it was boring. If you're into learning about other cultures and people, then you'll dig this course. Lots of reading is required and there are four quizzes. The lowest quiz grade is dropped. She offers quite a bit of extra credit and I think she's a great teacher. Again, not recommended to those who don't like a lot of reading especially about other cultures.

DISCLAIMER: This class was done in an auditorium-type setting with 150 students so if you sign up for Hudepohl in a class size less than this your experience may be different. For example, she said in smaller classes she likes essay tests over multiple choice.
I was worried about this class when I signed up for it and doubted my abilities to get into the subject matter but Dr. Hudepohl quickly put those concerns aside. She's very engaging during her lectures and makes the material interesting and understandable for her students.
The class requires a lot of discipline outside of it as you have to read two ethnographies (detailed studies of a particular society) with one being about 250 pages and another almost 200 pages. You also have to read almost twenty articles during the course of the semester and you are regularly assessed over these readings. However, Hudepohl doesn't try to screw you over on them and if you read them they should be a piece of cake.
All of the class notes are done on PowerPoint and require a lot of note taking. However, if you write down the tags on the PowerPoint plus the explanation/examples Hudepohl provides then the test questions concerning it should be easy.
The grading scale is out of 200 pts. You have four quizzes worth ten points each with your lowest quiz grade dropped and these are fairly easy if you read over your notes/articles/ethnography beforehand. You also have three tests with the first two being out of 50 pts. and the final being a cumulative one out of 70 pts. However, Hudepohl gives you a study guide on Blackboard that covers everything you need to know and prepare for these tests and that eases your anxiety quite a bit. Keep in mind, though, that in a class where only 200 pts. are offered you can only miss 20 pts. to get a B.
Overall, I found this class to be very fun and I got a lot out of it this semester. I'd definitely recommend Auntie Kate to anyone who wants to/needs to take this class in the future.

Dr Hudepohl is an excellent professor; she knows a lot about what she teaches and has experiences and stories to illustrate her points. The class was always interesting and she encourages students to participate in discussions. You should do fine on the tests (they are identification, short answer, usually with one essay question) if you pay attention and take good lecture notes. I enjoyed this class a lot and would recommend Auntie Kate to anyone who is interested in anthropology.

This class was my favorite this semester, and i would definately try to take her again. This class was so interesting.

She expects you to keep up and do the work. You're in college, so that shouldn't be a surprise. She is funny and interesting and has great fieldwork stories to tell and encourages input from the class. You can get into fun discussions. Notes in class, midterm and final, two projects, a few quizzes. It seems a lot of work compared to other 100 level courses. If you're looking for a class you can slack off in, it's not this one. It's not difficult, it's just a class where you are encouraged to learn.

the teacher is very nice and will help you if you need it. the material is interesting but there is way too many notes. the class seems to last forever! there is also a lot of reading and books required. you have to go to the library and get articles from the circulation desk every week, which is a pain. test aren't that bad, you pretty much just have to study ALL of your notes and make sure you know examples that she discussed in class. i would not recommend this class if you are looking for a easy gen ed.

This class is moderately easy. She is one of the nicest teachers I've ever had. She's sweet, very accessible outside of the class, cooperative, and kind. The material is somewhat interesting as are the books. HOWEVER, do not take this class early in the morning. She is interesting, true, but she is also very boring. I just couldn't keep my concentration in this class which resulted in poor attendance.
The projects are time-consuming, but they aren't hard and are easily managed. The reading isn't too bad... you can do well in the class without reading because her notes are all-inclusive, and the outside readings that are assigned are discussed in class. I'd take her again... maybe at noon or so... after a couple mountain dews.

I like her as a person and she makes a topic I already find interesting even more so, but she needs to realize that it is an entry level class. She assigns insane amounts of reading (though it is interesting for the most part), I simply don't have that much time. And her projects are more time consuming than all my other classes put togather.

Alright... This woman has to be the most boring lady I've ever come in contact with.... She rants and raves around class, wailing her arms and skipping around the room when explaining things... and she NEVER EVER let's you out early... In fact, she keeps you exactly till the time you are suppose to get out or over... I thought the class would be pretty interesting, but I dread going to it everyday now... It's easy... but I hate it.... In my opinion I would suggest you not take her... But hey, it's up to you...

I was a little concerned about this class because the teacher was new, but she qualifies as a bodacious babe. She is pretty nice and pretty relaxed. There are four books. The class has a midterm, a final, and about 4 projects. The projects are not hard, but some are a bit time consuming. For example, you must sit and watch people for an hour at some loactions and write what they do. The material is okay, and there is a review sheet for the tests. Altogether, this class is decent but not a "bunny" course as one guy I talked to originally thought.
