Mr. Alvarez is the most genuine professor I have had to date at Western. He will, without a doubt, bend over backwards to assist you in anyway possible with papers or even in life. He would try and ensure everyone understood the what was being asked or presented, which was very helpful. He also bumped the due date back on a few assignments. For the most part easy grader. Attend class and turn in all of the assignments and you'll most likely get at least a B, put in some effort and you should get an A.

I took Dr. Alvarez's English 300 class through Independent Learning and found it to be an exhilarating and intellectually stimulating experience. He has high expectations from his students and demands quality work, but he is a fair grader and is more than willing to help you when you need it.
Note that you will be expected to work in this course; this is English 300 and not a pushover bird course. When you need help, be proactive and ask and I assure you, Dr. Alvarez will reciprocate and give you the help you need.

He is one of the best teachers i have EVER had. With that being said, i wanted to learn the correct way to write a paper. The technical stuff like grammar and citing and stuff like that, and we didn't do that at the begining of the class... he threw 3 major essays at us, and now that the class is almost over, we are just now covering the technical stuff... but whatever, he is AWESOME and i can't wait untill English 300 to take him again.

I loved this class. I hate english but he made it enjoyable. He would allow us to turn our papers in and he would review it and give it back to get a better grade. He also was a nice man and even funny at times. One thing he did not play about was having our phones out and talking while he was... he would give us pop quizzes for the whole class if he caught someone doing so. Overall great class... I wanted to take him for eng 300 but there was a time confliction.

Mr. Alvarez is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He does grade really hard and he expects alot out of you. Attendance is mandatory and if you miss alot it lowers your grade. But he cares alot about his students and he is willing to help you if you need it.

Mr. Alvarez is okay. I had him for a 3 week summer course. It was 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. He wasted a lot of time showing our class videos on YouTube that had very little to NOTHING to do with the course. One day he wasted an entire hour on YouTube and showing us videos of his kids, who are cute, but do not further my understanding of literature. He also cusses a lot, having used the F word and the C word (yeah, that one) in class multiple times. I'm not offended by cussing, but I felt it was incredibly unprofessional.
That being said, his understanding of what he is teaching is great and he is good at conveying ideas and concepts. If he would cut all the other bullcrap he'd be awesome.
Also, he decides quickly who he likes and who he doesn't. I am not a paranoid person about this, but I don't think Mr. Alvarez liked me much at all despite my effort.
Overall, if he's your last resort, or if you like a bunch of your time wasted, take him. If not, find someone else who is a more professional teacher.

I took the class as an IL course which was the biggest mistake ever!!! He grades very difficult and inconsistant. It would often take him up to three weeks to post my assignment grade so that I could move on to the next section (which became very annoying!!!). Thank goodness its OVER!!

He also teaches in ways so you can remember. Just make sure you show up for class, most grades are participation. Group work

Alvarez is a GREAT guy. Hes very helpful, always listens, and is funny. You can only miss classes 3 times before deductions and the essays can be hard. you will have to write 3 seprate essays (4pages, 6pages, 61/2 pages) along with many smaller papers. Most papers will branch off of Kenneth Burkes "language as symbolic action"-this book can be overwhelming and wierd at first but you might get the hang of it due to in class discussions. His grammar exams are very elementary and you will pass those. Hes probably one of the nicest teachers you will find and if you can accept a little hard work then take him. I hate english but i still liked the class

He does not teach this class as Eng 100, it is on the level of Eng 300. You write 3 papers with the shortest one being 5 pages. You have the chance to revise them to improve your grade, but he barely gives them to you in time to do it before the semster is over. All three papers are basically the same thing, you see how someone used language to persuade people and relate it to your ridiculous text book. Do not take this teacher.

Hmmmm, lets see. I'm going with bullet style on this one
- I've never seen more youtube videos in a class
- I've never heard more fart noises played.
- He decided to give notes on how to properly write a paper, a week before the paper was due.

I think Mr. Alvarez is a wonderful educator! It is obvious that he is passionate about what he does. I took his english 200 class which I enjoyed, and that is what got me to take is 300 class. I learned a lot in his class. I believe that he cares about his students and wants them to take something out of the class. Throughout the semester we had to do many different papers which all helped to make the research paper become eaiser. Mr. Alvarez is flexible and easy to work with. Take him!

Dr.Alvarez is by far one of the best professors I have had. He is very personable and makes everything very easy to understand. He wants you to learn and he wants you to ask questions. There is a lot of in class group work but it is very simple and offers easy points. There are short quizzes almost everyday but they are simple as long as you read the short pieces assigned. This class is easy with Dr.Alvarez and a blast. I definately suggest him to anyone.

He is a really good teacher. I am horrible when it comes to writing papers but he really tries to heko you out as much as he can. You have 3 papers to write plus a cover essay for your portfolio. There are no tests in this class just a few quizzes which are not all that hard. Your final is your portfolio. You can revise your papers as many times as you would like. I spent two entire days on one paper and when i got it back i received a 68 and it brought me to the tears because i didn't understand what i had done wrong. I went to talk to him about my grade and I got the whole idea wrong about my paper. I revised every single one of my papers and made A's on all of them. He is a difficult teacher and he grades you harder on your first drafts so you will go back and revise them and do better. I recommend him to anyone he has definitely improved my writing skills and I can't wait to take him for eng200!!!

Mr. Alvarez is one of the greatest teachers ever! I enjoyed this class greatly! He will ask why you are taking the class and unless you're a Eng major you're taking it because of Gen Ed. He will make it worth while! He is so funny and very random at times. The class was pretty easy but required a bit of work. You'll have to write two journals, not too bad but do them the day they are assigned don't wait to the last minute. Put tons of effort into your papers and everything should go smoothly. Make sure to read what is asked because there will be an easy 5 point quiz everyday just about. Take him if you can!

In my 100 class we had to write 3 essays; a 5 page, a 6 page, and a 6.5 page. The papers are hard to write (especially for a 100 class) and take up a lot of time. Mr. Alvarez is a good teacher though, and he usually uses several examples to get his point across. He will help you out of class if you need it. If you don't mind writing long essays and the occasional arrogant remark, take Alvarez.

The worst teacher I ever took. He thinks this is a 300 level course. He doesn't know how to teach. He gives you a prompt for the paper and expects you to know how to write it. Trust me you would be better off having anybody else. You don't want to take that teacher. The class is based on only 100 points. The first essay is 10% of your grade, the second 15% and third is worth 25%. Worst teacher for English!!

Mr. Alvarez is a great guy with a wonderful personality. He gives quizzes at the beginning of almost every class, but there simple if you read the material. He makes you write journals as your homework. You have to read the stories, plays, and poems. The tests are not that hard plus he lets us use notes. This class is easy if you put some effort into it!

I think this course was not taught as a 100 level course. I felt lost because of how difficult he made some of the assigments were. And you shouldnt feel that lost in a 100 level class. He made us write so much. In eng. 100 you write 5 paragraph essays, he was having us page 4 to 7 page essays. He is has a smart mouth and thinks its cool to call you out infront of the whole class. If he had you before in class, he leaves you alone, but if you are new to the class he feels the need to pick on you, and he favors people. So if you cant deal with writing and smart mouth people DONT TAKE HIM.!!

Mr. Alvarez is a great teacher. He is very understanding and easy to work with. He is funny and will keep you laughing, but he also expects you to do the work. Beware though, you will rarely get out of class early. You will have to write 3-4 essays in his class. If he's feeling generous maybe just 3.

Mr. Alvarez is a good teacher, but his course is somewhat difficult if you are not familiar with writing papers. That is all the class is made of is major papers. But he is a good natured teacher none the less.
