Let me first say that I had Dr. Gooding during the summer of 2005 and that this might be subject to change for the regular semester.
My first impression of Dr. Gooding was that he was really nice and more than likely willing to help students learn and achieve. Over the course of the summer term I learned very differently.
Each day, Dr. Gooding begins class 15 minutes passed the time supposed to start. This is nice but it's because he DOES NOT care about being in the classroom.
His quizzes he gave us are ridiculous. First, his quizzes were all POP quizzes and you never knew when you were having them. Secondly the questions on the quizzes were very poorly written to reflect Dr. Gooding's personal interpretation of the subject material and the readings that were to be read.
His tests aren't too bad and are mostly multiple choice and true or false in composition.
In terms of his general attitude toward students he is two-faced. He will tell someone that they can make up a quiz or a test and then turn right back around and tell them differently. At the same time if you question one of the "correct" responses to a question on a quiz or test based on the way it was written, etc. then he will get upset, explain why he is right, and then make the class regret it later in his subjective grading system.
Just to emphasize my point, and I realize some will view this as a rant and rave against a teacher, but this is the truth from someone who is going to be a teacher and who has discussed these things with several others and they feel the same as I do.
Maybe Dr. Gooding is truly a nice person, but I question his motives for teaching, his ability to teach, and his desire to educate and help others.

Dr. Gooding seemed to have no idea what direction he was going to take this class. He did not follow the syllabis at all.
When he finally realized we were comming to the end of the semester and had done absolutly nothing the entire time he piled on a bunch of assignments at the last minute. His tests were very unorganized. If you are an anth major you have to take this class if you are not an anth major DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS or you will be sorry you did.

The semester that I took this course I read the books, while others blew them off. I was able to recieve an A by doing so, so keep up the text reading and you'll do great! Don't be lazy.

Dr. Gooding is hilarious, and at first I loved his class...until i realized that the test content would not be on his mother-in-law. His lectures consist of rambling about family, and an occaisonal lecture on the lakota during which he just randomly talks. His exams seem to be written 20 minutes before class, in an oh shit I have to do this now sort of way. Avoid him if you can, you'll laugh at first, but it wont last long.

if you take this class, and do the easy easy reading and silly quizzes, you'll get an A. You are supposed to post twice to a discussion thread for every unit, and you will lead one of the discussions at some point in the semester. He does not participate at all in this, no feedback. you get one quiz each unit, very easy, 8 units total and thats it. You can get an A easy, but this isnt even teaching, he's never involved at all.

My first impression of Dr. Gooding was a good one, but as time went by, that sort of faded. I took this class online and though it wasn't very challenging, he just didn't seem organized AT ALL. We didn't follow the syllabus very well at all and had like 4 less quizzes than we were supposed to, making less points available. Overall, it was a decent course and I love the convenience of WEB courses, so I'd take it again. Just don't expect more than the minimum from Gooding.

Mr. Gooding is a very interesting fellow and offers neat experiences of other cultures. However, there are 2 tests, 3 field work papers (at least 3pgs. long) and a cummulative final. I think that too much information was forced on my class. For heaven sakes we had 3 textbooks. Everyday we would have class discussions over articles, notes from our other book, and we had to read an entire novel. The bookstore did not order enough books, so many went without books and that is not fair.

He was very funny and made class enjoyable with his constant jokes and stories. He offered a lot of extra credit for participating in this singing thing we did. Plus, the class is pretty simple, yet you still learn a lot from it and you'll end up looking at everything with a new perspective.

I found this course very interesting. You have to read the articles he assigns but they are very short and easy to understand. His tests are fairly easy but still must be studied for. There are projects assigned throughout the semester that are easy points. He is a great professor and had my class laughing most everyday. I reccommend this to anyone interested in other cultures.

Mr. Gooding is an excellent teacher who is very enthusiastic about anthropology. Although he focuses a lot on the Lakota tribe with whom he spent several years with, the class is still very enjoyable. He is a good-natured, laid-back, and funny guy. Although I received a C (which I thought I would do better than), I still enjoyed his class and highly recommend taking him.

This has been my favorite class of the semester. Dr. Gooding's lectures are always entertaining and often comedic. He always urges students to come to his office hours, which are pretty generous. He's very helpful and doesn't mind taking his time to talk to you.
It *is* true that Dr. Gooding is nitpicky when it comes to quizzes and exams. However, he is generous with his study guides. If you study what he tells you, you'll be fine. And it *is* true that there is a lot of "required" reading, but I only read one of the books and I expect an A. Because he gives you pretty precise study guides, it's easy just to read the sections that you know will be on the test and learn those specific answers.
This class material is interesting enough, but Dr. Gooding is an excellent professor who makes the class genuinely enjoyable. If you take him, just be prepared to take some time to study the study guides.

This class sucked. There is way too much reading required (throughout the course's *four* books), leading to too much material from which possible quiz or test questions may come from, making this course more difficult than it needed to be. Test score distribution for both sections of Dr. Gooding's 120 class this semester approximated a Bell curve, with slightly more F's than A's. This is terrible for an introductory, general education class. Dr. Gooding provides study guides, but be prepared to recite the notes verbatim when you answer the five open-ended questions on the exams and quizzes. Dr. Gooding makes a set of answers for the test and sets criteria for what a 5-point answer includes, etc., then he or his graduate assistant arbitrarily determines the number of points you will receive for a particular question, regarding the content of the answer with no consideration given to the quality.
Some of the lectures are interesting, but don't bother trying to express a dissenting opinion, provide additional insight, or make a logical analogy. He will shoot you down. Dr. Gooding's authoritarian style and seeming ignorance of choices which differ from the norm is flabbergasting coming from someone who is supposed to be teaching about the study of other cultures.

Dr. Gooding is a very interesting professor. He has done extensive fieldwork with the Lakota, and he brings his experiences up in class often. His class is interesting, for the most part, and he is funny. This class has two exams (midterm and final), two quizzes, and two fieldwork assignments for grades. Extra credit may or may not be available.
I think his grading policies are crap. He is extremely nit-picky; you must have all the information he wants down on your paper in a certain way or he will knock off major points. No points for effort even if you have most of the information down, it's all or none. I failed his midterm for this reason, not having everything he wanted in the exact way he wanted.
This class is an interesting general ed, but be prepared to do lots of reading and studying and do everything exactly as he tells you.

This class has 4 textbooks and a lot of reading! The main thing I did not like about him is when he grades assignments he just writes down a grade and no explanation. All around he is a cool guy and you will learn about some interesting cultures.

I thought I liked anthropology until I took this class (it was probably just me). Professor Gooding is interesting and funny sometimes, but the class itself wasn’t all that great. There were two fieldwork assignments, two quizzes, a mid-term, and a final. The quizzes, mid-term, and final are pretty much the same format of about five essay questions over readings from the class. One book is interesting, but a couple of others aren’t any good and I don’t think very many people read them. I was extremely bored most of the time. I know it is important to learn about other cultures, but unless you’re a die-hard anthropologist, leave this class to somebody else.

Erik is the best teacher in the Anthroplogy dept and the second best teacher I've ever had. He's young and funny. He is also very passionate about the things he teaches. He enjoys his work and he wants his students to as well. He doesn't have teaching methods like most teachers. He does a lot of interactive activities to demonstrate points. There is reading involved, but it's actually interesting. The tests are essay and he gives study guides to help out. You'll work in this class, but it won't be stressful. You'll enjoy it and learn too.

I really enjoyed this class and learned alot from it. His enthusiasm toward culture was catching. He gives study guides for every test which makes them very easy to study for.
