After taking this course I have a greater appreciation for Art History, but I must say this class was a challenge. The notes: Excessive. The Exams: Outrageous. After studying for 4 days for a final, I barely received a "C", which was my highest grade in the entire class. I'm an above-average student and not averse to studying, but even I was overwhelmed...and I considered being a History Major before coming to SCAD.
2 classes before the actual exam (of which there are 4), the students recieved a "review sheet" which stated which of the images in the text "might" be on the exam. The least amount we received for one exam was 60...not bad. BUT: (big but here) students were expected to know the WHO, WHAT, WHEN (as precise as possible), WHERE, WHY (why it was created, what purpose it served, was there a patronage), and HOW (How was it created, using what material(s)). Aside from all this, you must be able to correlate both positively and negatively b/w other pieces, both included in the exam and from previous exams. This isn't a class in which you can forget the information 3 mins after taking the exam.
J. Hamilton is an interesting teacher. Having a major in Architectural History, a majority of the things you'll be learning are...you guessed it: architecture. It's very interesting...if you can stay awake in a dark room listening to his voice while watching slide after slide after slide...*zzzzz*.
Over all, if you are REALLY into studying, you can remember everything that was said in class, you have a passion for details, and you LOOOVE to take detailed and extensive notes, this class is for you.
I learned alot, but I also stressed alot.
