Additional Comments
I learned a lot in this class. However, Dr. Abbott is one of the most unpleasant people I have ever encountered in my life. She's cool enough in class, but outside of class she refused to acknowledge me, EVEN AS I WAS WALKING TO HER CLASS (there were 8 people in my class so I KNOW she knows who I am), and when I went to her office to ask her some questions about the midterm, she first asked me if I was a history major. When I said no, she had no more comments for me. She encourages us to speak in class (in fact, your grade is 20% attendance and participation, whatever that means) but whenever I said anything, she looked at me like I was speaking Dutch and totally disregarded anything I had to say. The course material I actually really enjoyed, but it really needs to be split into two sections because there is too much to cover in one semester. As for what your grade consists of, there is a midterm, a final, and a term paper. The term paper was due for me the Monday of finals week and the final Thursday. It sucked. A lot. The final and the midterm were both take-home and both consisted of "short answers" off one page each--we had to do 7, quotations that you had to explain for at least a page--3 of those, and a 5-8 page essay. The term paper had to be from primary sources and 10-12 pages. I THINK I got a B in this course, but I wouldn't be surprised if I got a C. If you do decide to take this class, or any of her classes, be prepared to do a LOT of reading (we read 5 books along with readings out of 3 texts) and take lots of notes.

She is not a really tough grader. I actually ended up getting a A in the class. She's fair, and a good teacher, just not very personable. To me anyway. I just can't figure out why she doesn't like me.
