I guess Dr. Yambor has softened up a bit since most of the previous reviews were posted. Her class is very laid back and she tells a lot of entertaining stories.
There are three non-cumulative quizzes over the course of the semester. Quizzes come directly from the notes, which are in PowerPoint form and available on Blackboard. She puts a lot of emphasis on reading the textbooks but rarely includes book-specific information on quizzes. I never read anything after the first quiz.
You have to write a Media Reflection Exercise, which consists of watching a movie and writing five pages about your thoughts on it. She assigned this to us during a week when she cancelled class, so it wasn't bad.
The worst part of the class is the two group projects. One of them involves an hour-long presentation and requires each group member to write a five-page paper, while the other requires a 10-minute presentation with a 20-page paper (1 paper per group). I had awesome group members, but your experience in this class could easily be ruined if you end up with crappy group members.
She grades papers pretty leniently with the exception of the 20-page group paper, in which she counts off for each typo and grammatical error.
There is a good chance you will enjoy this class. It's not the easiest, but it is definitely manageable.

I loved this professor! She's really cool and extremely personable. She understands that when dealing with students you have to be excited and upbeat in order to hold their attention. She has kind of a dirty mouth, but nothing she says is offensive, If anything, it's hilarious! There are four total exams and all of them are online. The only other grades we had were "Collaborative Carnivals", where we chose articles over a topic we chose as a class and talked about them in groups. I loved this class so much that I signed up to take another course with her next semester. I highly recommend taking her.

If Satan had a love child with Adolf Hitler, it would be Marjorie Yambor. This woman is insane. She will belittle you in class, give horrible grades for any paper you write, and reiterate over and over the fact that she has a PHD and any work you do in her class in insignificant compared to the 3000000 million page dissertation she did for her doctorate. DO NOT TAKE HER! E V E R ! ! This class is so damn boring!! It should be fun, but the professors aren't even up to date on popular culture....we spent most of the time reading articles from the 90's and early 2000's as well as watching Star Trek videos and discussing theories of mass culture. There are WAY too many papers, including a Research Paper that will suck the life right out of you. The tests are fill in the blanks and essay - pretty hard, especially for a 100 level class. After this semester a small part of my soul has shriveled up and died thanks to Dr. Yambor.

I've never withdrew from a course before but for this teacher I had to make an exception. While she may SEEM to be a nice and a down-to-earth teacher, she is not what she portrays.
She does not like to to to know her students very well, especially when it comes to grading. This class composes of 2 teachers who switch off grading your work and she definitely grades your work more harshly than needed. And be careful not to be too smart-- or your academic integrity will be threatened. She accused my of plagiarizing a concept for a take-home midterm because it sounded too scholarly for a dumb student to write. As I mentioned before, she does not want to get to know students and will never know your sense of writing style. And on top of that, she couldn't prove that there was plagiarism! It took going to the department head to get the grade changed but the damage was done.
Do not assume that POP 101 is an easy class. It isn't. Not for a long shot!
If you can, never take this class, especially when Dr. Yambor is teaching it.

She is definitely the most misunderstood professor. People who complain about her are generally just too stupid to understand her humor or her class. She won't coddle you and give you an A. You have to work and she will try to help if you if you need it and she sees you making an effort. She loves people with strong opinions and has a lot of open discussion. She can really open your mind too if you get past everything else.

She gives powerpoints...don't study them...all her questions come straight from the book but most the time they're too wordy and confuse the heck out of you. Know the book by heart if u do end up taking her...but i warn you its hard! theres 4 tests including the final...pretty much make up your grade...better know the material or you will fail! also on all of her tests...some answers are acronyms so know those too! basically read and re read all the chapters! PS...if u need motivation to go to class...just go to see what shes going to wear!

I had heard many things about Dr. Yambor but her class was interesting and one of my favorites so far. Dr. Yambor is a little out there but she really knows her stuff and you can learn a lot from her. She let us make our own tests by posting questions to blackboard she pulled the questions directly from there to make our tests making it very easy to make an A. You do write two lengthy papers that she grades hard but they are over interesting material. Overall this was a great class.

Dr. Yambor is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. She could care less about teaching, much less her students. Her notes were useless so I ended up making my own by skimming the books. These ended up being about 20 pages long and I usually ended up with a C or low B on the test. She included the most random stuff on her tests. She was very rude and spend most of the class time trying to push her morals on us. She spent 15 minutes once explaining to us while we should smoke pot. She never lets you leave early after tests. A huge chunk of your grade is a 45 minute presentation that you give with a group and a 5 page paper. The only problem is so many people drop the class that you could end up giving the entire presentation by yourself. NEVER BE LATE FOR THIS CLASS! She also calls her boyfriend her "lover" which is freaking creepy. I dreaded this class and I hated her with a passion. The only thing nice she did was curve all the tests. That's basically the only reason I passed. Take another teacher if you can!!

I DID NOT LIKE MS YAMBOR! Although I felt like Ms Yambor was a racist, feminist, intolerant and extremely narrow-minded woman she is still a good teacher. If you don’t agree with her, she hates you. If you represent everything she doesn’t she grades you accordingly. But will help you when you need it. If you visit her during her office hours she will try to help you. I did not enjoy her class. I did not enjoy her and I definitely do not recommend her to anyone who is opinionated because you will walk out of that class each time- upset.

Imagine if Morticia Adams started taking speed, became manic, and began teaching college courses. Congratulations. You've just met Yambor.
Ask any astrophysicist what the central point of our solar system is, and you'll invariably get one answer: "The Sun."
Not in Yamborland! Nope, she is the center of her spooky universe, and every other human being is simply a mote of dust lucky enough to get caught (and GRACIOUSLY allowed to remain) in her gravitational field.
Yambor boasts that people are intimidated by the fact that she's a woman with opinions, who's not afraid to express them. A misconception on her part. Most students are terrified of her because her eyes are as dark and secret as a porcelain doll's. The kind of eyes you expect to see glaring at you, unblinking, as you writhe on a meathook in a dank basement dungeon.
Despite being omniscient, she can't be bothered to create Powerpoints, for we peons don't deserve such luxuries. Instead, she opens up Microsoft Word and types keywords in huge font, oftentimes never explaining why the word she typed was significant in any way. I have yet to determine where her test questions actually come from.
But don't worry about any of that. This class, whichever you may be taking, isn't about learning. It's about glorifying Marjorie Yambor, Golden Fashion-impaired God of the broadcasting department. Among the topics are:
-Her opinions. On everything.
-Why everyone else is an idiot for believing otherwise.
-How well can she mockingly impersonate a valley girl after it stops being remotely amusing and moves well into the "disturbing" category
-Will your lackluster project be the one that finally shatters her fragile psyche?
Listen, Yambor. I know you read these things. You at least Google your name. NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR OPINIONS. It's difficult enough to retain the critical material you include as an afterthought to how AMAZING you are. Nobody is impressed by your ability to use the thesaurus, least of all the people attempting to take your largely incoherent tests.
YOU AREN'T IMPRESSING ANYONE. You want to amaze me? Act like a normal human being for once. No, that doesn't mean falling into a gender role or becoming a stereotype. It means not creeping your students out and being proud about it.

Yambor is one strange lady to say the least. If you don't see things the way she does, she blasts you and your ways of thinking. I went to her office one time to get more understanding on an assignment. This assignment we had to find an article and copy it. I went to her office to ask her what articles she allowed and didn't allow. She offered me a piece and I rejected it because I wasn't interested. I did research on my own in the library and later ended up copying the piece I rejected because I read the article and took more interest. When she handed it back she brought the entire class to her attention and told them that I was a lame duck and came to her just for an "easy A". Not only did she make me look stupid she was lying. I went up to her after class and explained my side of the story and she said I was awesome. She didn't mean to make me look bad. In fact she thought highly of me because I had been the only student so far that semester to come and seek advice. She made no sense at all. I stongly would advise you to not take this crazy women... She's nuts!!!

Dr. Marjorie Yambor has a reputation for being a ball-busting, goth-toting professor who has no regards to your well-being, but really she's an incredible professor. I would say as a first-time student of hers that you shouldnt worry about her being hard or strict or any of that matter, because she's only that way if you dont come to class or dont study for her exams. I would say it would be a good idea to always show up for her class ON TIME. It would also be a good thing to take notes (she types them up on an overhead so that makes it easy, but also write down some things she says when she doesnt type them out) and to at least each chapter once to get an idea of what's being discussed. Her tests can seem tricky (I dont think I ever made an A on one of her exams) but as long as you read your notes (not just skim them through) and read the chapter at least once you'll get by. Her assignments are once a month, where you do a "collaborative carnival" which is a topic picked by the class to discuss in smaller groups by going to the library and copying an article or piece of text from a book about whatever topic you chose for that month. DO NOT PRINT FROM THE INTERNET! She will give you ZERO POINTS if you do. Yambor is not someone you can fool over too well, so I suggest abide by her rules in the syllabus to maintain a decent grade. Her classes really arent that boring, because by the end of the semester you are pretty much coming to class to discuss whatever is happening in the media. A good idea would be to speak up and say what's on your mind because she is a professor who likes it when students shoot off their mouths or argue someone's opinion...she will probably even praise you for saying something. She may appear tough and at times bizarre (her attire can be questionable) but she really is someone who knows her stuff and thinks the world of media and broadcasting is really cool stuff that everyone should get in on. You'll either love her or hate her, but take her just once and then decide what you think of Dr. Yambor.

Dr. Yambor is by far the strangest person that I have ever met in my entire life. Her outlook on life is not normal. If you have any likingness for the world today, she will bash you all day long. She thinks that the world is a big money hole and we are all being sucked down it. You have to take a ton of notes and read your textbook before every class. Her tests are always multiple choice, but they are EXTREMELY difficult. Stuff from the notes is never on the test. I am not a C student at all. This was probably the best class I've taken at Western thus far. Prof. Yambor is the single best teacher I've ever had. Period. She is an open-minded individual who is not afraid to be a non-conformist, a quality which I greatly admire. We have had some of the best discussions in this class, mainly about issues such as censorship and American consumerism. If you like the movie Fight Club and/or Bowling for Columbine, you're in luck! Both of these movies are examined extensively. The only complaint I have about the class was that I wish it would have been smaller so I could have expressed my opinions more easily. Other than that, it was great. Highly recommended.

Dr. Yambor is quite interesting. She is approachable (I think) and her class is really educational. You have to watch Fight Club and Bowling for Columbine for a class project and you have to go to the library 3 times during the semester for "collaborate carnivals"- they arn't hard at all, just time consuming. If you hate taking alot of notes, avoid this class. Also, if you hate to speak in front of large groups and get panic attacks (like me!) then don't take this class either. Overall, Dr. Yambor was one of my favorite professors and I plan to take more of her classes in the future.

Sure, there are few notes, because all she does is stand stealthily in front of the class degrading the "real world" and telling us about how none of us are going to make it, because we don't "see" the "real picture." Read everything she assigns twice, and you may have a shot at a C on the tests. The tests are laughable. They are the most obscure things that I have ever been subjected to at Western. You can study, but don't bet on studying the right things. In my class, she failed so many people that they went to the Dean. I'm not quite sure how I got out of there with a passing grade.

Dr. Yambor outside of the classroom is a nice woman, do not get me wrong. However, inside the classroom she is an angry beast. The tests are poorly structured because you dont have any clue what you really need to have studied and to further the class is graded basically on having her opinion, no other. For instance many in our class didnt agree with the concept of Post Modernism, Dr. Yambor of course thought we were morons for not getting it or more to the less not agreeing that everyone is out to get us in the world.
She is not a teacher to be challenged because she will just sneer at you. If at all possible avoid this course!!! Eventually you will hate going to the class but if you dont go you cant pass, hell even if you go you might not be able to pass!

She doesn't return e-mails or phone calls so don't even try and if you miss a test, You are SCREWED!

I was afraid this class was going to be bad because of Prof. Yambor's "unique" appearance, but it actually turned out okay. She really knows her stuff and tries hard to make the class interesting. Be prepared to watch movies (Fight Club) and she cancels classes so you can study for tests and do assignments. The tests are easy if you take notes and read the chapters. Studying before an exam is a must, but the questions are not in any way tricky.

Be prepared to read a hell of a lot of redundant material. Be prepared to watch Fight Club and Bowling for Columbine and then write a 4 page evaluation of both. Be prepared to agree to disagree.
She is very outspoken which at times can be good, but often leads the class into a tangent of discussions which lead to a lot of uneducated personal opinions being thrown around, which she does not stop, I think, for her own personal amusement. She does not go over the readings as much as I would have liked her to, and thus, I felt unprepared for her tests, which consist of vague associations and a sort of strange trickery. Example: link amusement with commodified negation of play. uh huh. Overall, a very entertaining class, but don't plan on getting an A unless you're a mind reader.

Yambor presents herself as open to new ideas, but she is not. Her tests are very picky and it's hard to study for them. reading the book is the best way to go. i took the class thinking she wouldn't be ignorant, but she is ignorant and close minded to everything she doesn't like.

Dr. Yambor is your worst nightmare. First of all, she has a wandering eye and every time you try to talk to her you dont know if she's looking at you or not and it spooks you out. And if that doesnt spook you enough then the black everything will. I'm talking lipstick, makeup, clothes, dyes her hair black and everything. The woman is a psycho-bitch. One day she walked in wearing devil horns and a cape and spider webs around her neck. Thats not even the worst part. She cant teach for shit. She uses big words to make up for her lack of knowledge on the content of the course. I hated this class and anyone else that takes it will clearly see why.

I found this course to be very informative. Dr. Yambor was very clear when explaining things to the class. Most any topic was open for discussion, which is where we did a lot of our learning. She provides study guides through e-mail, so the grade you make in this class is the grade you earn. There are a lot of interesting topics covered in this class, so I enjoyed it. I reccomend this class to anyone, not just broadcasting majors.

This teacher is very unusual. Her outfits are very unique. Purple, Red, and Black seem to be her favorite colors. Besides that, you take a lot of notes but the whole class is very interactive. She is very intimidating most of the time. Prepare to be in class on time or she will lock you out. She is very outspoken and will tell you right off if she doesn't like you or if she finds you irritating. Express your opinions as long as she believes that way too. The tests are really hard. And it is hard to understand what she is saying half the time. The class is okay, but it is VERY hard.

I like her and at the same time, she irritates me. She's condescending at one point and in the next she assumes we know everything. It's easy to get overwhelmed when you're reading the textbook. The book is beyond boring but the test come straight from it so read ahead and know your shit. Yambor is eccentric and you can become distracted looking at her weird garb but if you stay focused and say a few hail mary's before you enter the class you should be alright. She's not trying to hurt you, though her piercing gaze is slightly impersonal. It's not wise to question her...and don't feed her after midnight!! No matter what. Sorry, uh, if you take her, just pay attention and you should be alright. Really. Just don't giver her any water!

I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Dr. Yambor is different from any other professor you'll have. She's cool and she doesn't try to kill you with notes and difficult material. Read the book and you don't even need to come to class. You get extra credit if you dress up for Halloween!!

She is an unusual person, but the class was actually a lot of fun. This was the first time that she taught this course and she was a bit disorganized. I thought the class suffered because of her lack of organization and it made it difficult to receive the kind of grade that might normally happen. Overall she is not a bad teacher and she knows a lot about broadcasting.

Yambor knows her shit. She can't stand ignorant people or cell phones going off in class. You can do very well as long as you read the book. I made sure to sign up for her 201 class, I would recommend her to anyone. As long as you are not lazy and ignorant you will like her and she will like you just fine!

Yambor is very knowledgeable in her career field--if u have questions she can talk to you and give u guidance. She may dress sorta weird, but I found that to be a part of her idealology of being a professor. The class is not hard, the notes aren't much, and there is a lot of discussion that goes on. You will have to do 4 journals, besides that.

Yambor makes it very obvious that she knows her stuff. She has a lot of confidence which she will exhibit througout the semester in her unique attire. She is a "highbrow" professor who will let you know time and time again that she hates ignorant people. Her exams are difficult and may require a dictonary to determine the meaning of some of the words in her questions. Overall, she is an open-minded individual, but takes no crap.

She is a Glam Goth from hell. The only reason why i attended was to see what she would wear next. You dont need to take notes because the tests come straight from the readings. you will also have to read atricles related to broadcasting and write detailed papers on them. avoid her if possible. she is satan here on earth.
