I think Professor Borriello, by far, is THE best professor I've ever had. After a year-long hiatus, he returned to teaching at UW CSE in Fall Quarter 2003, which was when I had him.
There are so many good things I'd like to say about him, I don't know if I can list them all . . .
He's a very enthusiastic professor. His lectures are very animated and he gets excited about what he's teaching. Had I taken CSE 370 from a different professor, I don't think I'd enjoy learning about K-maps and such so much. His enthusiasm, as well as his physical attributes, earned him the (private) nickname, "Doc" (from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves), from me and my 2 friends.
He really cares about his students. Halfway through the quarter, I realized that I was just lost in the class. So I gathered my courage and went to his office hours to ask for some help. He was willing to sit down and go over the text, section by section, with me to make sure I understood the concepts. I came out from the office hours feeling not-so-lost. Also, unlike many other professors, he actually came down into the labs to see how the students are doing and whether they needed any help (even though there were always 2 TAs present).
He's funny and can relate to the students. He's one of those professors who don't mind sitting down with the students and just talk about random, class-unrelated things. This helped a lot of us get confortable with him. And besides, he's also watched "Pirates of the Caribbean" and said that Johnny Depp "wears good eye makeup" . . . LOL. And once you get to know him (like me and friends did), he starts to tease you (in a good way).
And the best part? None of us were pleased that our CSE 370 final was an 8:30AM final. So, to make up for the mandatory early rise, Borriello brought several boxes of Krispy Kremes on the morning of the final. He told us to each get a donut prior to starting the final. Then halfway through the exam, he said, "I think it's time for another donut." So he actually went around the class with an open box of Krispy Kremes, and offered each and every student another donut.
Now that is one AWESOME professor :)
