Dr. Lucas is a great professor! Considering some of the horror stories I heard about other Wes. Civ professors I'm really glad I took his class. He is a very friendly professor and genuinely wants all his students to succeed. There are 4 cultural events you have to attend in a semester, 2 papers you have to write (a document analysis and book report), 12 quizzes throughout the semester (he drops the lowest two grades), and 3 exams including the final. However he spreads all of it, and you will hardly know there is that much to stuff to complete. The notes are all lecture so you should attend every class and take good notes for the exams, which are all essay. However he speaks slowly and makes the material interesting. Even with all of that this is a relatively easy class and Dr. Lucas doesn't grade hard. I honestly think this is one of the easiest Wes. Civ classes.

Mr. Lucas is a nice guy but he is extremely out of date. Does not use any type of technology, and he stands there and talks the entire time. He is very boring and sometimes a pervert. The tests are are supposed to be finished in an hour and contain 3 essays and Identifications. The essays must be long too, because he wants them completely explained in detail. If you hate history, in which I do, then you should not take this class. He does not make it interesting and he never lets you know what to study for the essays. I struggled in this class while having A's in my others.

You don't even need the book for this course, but I would pick another teacher. All his test questions come from his notes which are all spoken for the most part. He tries to be funny telling old jokes but that won't help you pass his tests and he gets sidetracked. His questions are essays on the test and are hard. I didn't like the guy or the class.

Dr. Lucas has been one of my favorite history professors at WKU so far! After reading his evaluations I was a little unsure, but decided to try the class anyway. He is a really sweet guy with a dry sense of humor. He is super prompt about answering e-mails and will help with anything you ask. There are 12 multiple choice quizzes over the assigned reading but only 10 count towards your final grade. There are 3 papers, a mid-term, and a final. I think he grades relatively easy. If you need a class to take, take Dr. Lucas!

Dr. Lucas is a very funny guy but his course is very challenging. I am a Straight A History major who barely crawled out a B in his class. You have 12 pop quizzes from the textbook but he drops the 2 lowest. You then have 3 papers to write and the guidelines are very vague. Then you have a midterm (20%) and a final (40%) and he gives no study guides. The exams could be over anything you covered in class and he expects you to have great detail in your essays. Overall i enjoyed this class but it was a bit stressful at times. He has been teaching at Western for 40 years so he teaches this class with an old school approach. Also he is a huge liberal and often tries to trash Conservatives, kinda gets old after a few weeks.

While Dr. Lucas is an interesting person, his class is still stuck in the 1950s. It is constant lecture, a pop quiz whenever he feels like it (over the book which he does not refer to in his lectures), and the exams are ALL essays. If you take Dr. Lucas, be prepared to have no life from day 1. It is constant studying.

M.B. Lucas is scary the first time you meet him. He is a really nice guy but he only wishes to help those excell who have the desire to. He gives 12 reading quizzes that are worth 10 points each. At the end of the semester, he drops your lowest 2 quiz grades. There is a map at the beginning of class that you have to fill out which is an easy 100 because you have 2 weeks to do it. You also have to attend 4 cultural events and write a short (1 page max) paper about each one. SO EASY!
There are two more assignments which actually require thought. You have to analyze a historical document, which he gives you, and write a book review; he grades very generously on all of these!
I won't lie, this class is challenging but he is a very good professor. You have to read the material for the quizzes or you will fail them. You have to study for the tests, which are essays, or you will not do well.
Anyone who is tired of sitting through classes where you don't learn anything should take M.B. Lucas. He's a badass.

Dr. Lucas is a really good professor. Most people don't like him for the notes he gives and for his essay tests, but how else can you teach History? Tests are 4 questions, 25 points each. There are 2 one-hour tests and a final. The one-hour tests have an identification question, a mandatory question, and 2 choice questions. The final has a mandatory comprehensive question and 3 choice questions, but he gives you two possible comprehensive questions to study for the exam and only puts one on the exam. Besides that, his lectures are tolerable (I had him on MWF, and 55 minutes was plenty long enough). There are 12 quizzes over the text that account for one test grade...and I usually made 7/10 on those and still got an A. I highly reccomend M.B. for Hist-120.

This class was the most difficult class I have taken so far. It requires a lot of studying and reading. My advice is to attend class everyday because you take a bunch of notes each day. All tests are essay which can be really hard if you dont know the stuff. I've never devoted so much time to a class in my life. It paid offf in the end though. Dr.Lucas is a great guy, his jokes can be funny and he really knows his stuff. Lucas gets a smiley, but the class gets one of those disappointed looking faces.

I found this course to be quite difficult, and did not make the grade I wanted to even though I worked hard. However, I'm not very good at history and don't like the subject that much. Lucas is a VERY good teacher though. He is challenging, and he is everything a good college professor should be. I mean, if you don't want a challenge, why the heck are you in college? He gives lots of notes, and you better know your stuff when it comes to his tests because they are all essay, and you can't really BS and get by. But I liked the class overall.

Dr. Lucas is a very interesting teacher, but sometimes goes off on tangents and takes a minute to get back to the lecture. Every class is a lecture where you will take about 4-5 pages of intensive notes. He does not review before the test but may give you a slight hint about what will NOT be on the test. There are only two tests, each is worth 25% of your grade, the final is worth 25%, and the 10 highest of 12 random pop quiz grades are the other 25%. He will give some extra credit for going to four cultural events and doing a good job on the required book report.

IF you're even SLIGHTLY prone to oversleeping, you might want to sign up for a later class period. One missed class can really hurt come exam time (Not to mention you might miss a pop quiz)
Also, while the quizzes are multiple choice from the book assignment, the tests are all-essay from lecture notes, and tests make the majority of the grade...If you have problems with essay exams, I'd probably avoid Dr. Lucas' class, just on that factor. If you don't mind essay exams, and if you can make it to class on time EVERY class period, then, it's not a bad class.\

Dr. Lucas is challenging. His lectures last the entire period and are filled with notes, he gives twelve random pop quizzes throughout the semester, and his tests are all essay. He offers extra credit opportunities by way of attending "cultural" events on campus, and the book review listed on the syllabus as "required" is, in fact, extra credit. On the upside, I did learn a lot in his class. This is the good part, though. Although Dr. Lucas is very knowledgable and offers a proper challenge, he is also rude and condescending to his students in his "jokes." He often crosses the line and has a bad habit of picking on students who actually do participate. However, if you do take this class, I would recommend participating as much as possible. He likes to give pop quizzes to make sure his students are getting their reading in. A lot of notetaking in this course and recommend good class attendance.

I had 4 A's and this C. The exams cover a lot of material and they are all essay. This was definitely my hardest class yet (too difficult for 100 level). I wish I would have dropped it!!

Failed my first exam due to spelling errors. Dropped the class after he told me it didn't matter how hard I worked I wouldn't get an A out of his class. For that matter If I couldn't spell I didn't belong in college. I am a JR. with a 3.8 grade point avg. I took the class under another instructor and received an A. I believe he left the the good comments about himself. Everyone I know who had him said he dosen't belong in a class room. I almost droped out of school after he told me how I didn't belong in college. My English 300 teacher said he was a Moron and not to listen to him. I am so glad I spoke with her. I still can't spell his name correctly. But it does fit him!
Corrected 02/25/2003:
Corrected the professor's first name; it's "Marion," not "Moron." Please try to keep your comments in the "comments" section only. Thanks.

Dr. Lucas is tough. The exams are essay, but the questions are straightforward and not misleading. I would recommend him if you really want to learn something in this course.

Dr. Lucas puts some of his main points on the board during the lecture. His tests are all essay. Stick with the course, don't be a quitter and you will learn something whether you want to or not.

All essay exams?? Plus, I missed more points for minor spelling or grammatical errors than the substance of my answers! I dropped after first exam.
Update 02/25/2003:
